The Tatum Group Masterpieces, Vol. 8. "Please retry". Tatum was usually best playing alone. He didn’t even need a rhythm section -he created his own rhythmic propulsion. The exception was this album, one of the undisputed classics in recorded jazz. It’s a harmonious meeting of opposites. Tatum always created storms of notes, pushing the rhythm along as though oblivious to other players around him, but what he played so rich, so interesting and inherently musical, that who cared!
