UK Release Date - 12th Aug 2002. US Release Date - 30th Jul 2002. Album Type - Studio Album. Producer - Pete Woodroffe/Def Leppard. The eigth studio album released by the band. Originally to be known as "Ten" the roman numeral but quickly changed to X when it was clear that's what people would be calling it. The title was used to signify the fact that this was the tenth major album release from 'On Through The Night' in 1980 and including 'Retro-Active' and 'Vault' - but not the 'High 'n' Dry' re-release from 1984. The album was not a major hit with either critics or fans but still sold fairly well

A year before the release, the band announced that they were working on a new album. This time the tenth album was expected with great interest. Fans waited from a band more hits, more succesfull continuation of the ideas of "Euphoria" ... And it was happened - "X" became the same original euphoric-alternative mix, with a lot of ballads and with more solid sound. The music contains a bit more acoustics in conjunction with all the same alternative rhythmic parts that we already heard on the previous album. Among the tracks most memorable are the hit "You're So Beautiful", "Four Letter Word", power ballad "Torn To Shreds" and filled with classic riffs "Scar" - the best song on the album. The result is a very good album, but it's inferior to the classical albums of the band.

Apparently this is a very polarizing album. I kind of hate it, but some folks who hate it also hate Euphoria, which I think is great. I was quite resentful when I first heard it in 2002, it sounded boy-bandish and I'd started listening to Def Leppard in the first place, as an alternative to boy-bands! It's hard to think of them as maturing when they sound like that. I've seen some folks take it a bit personally, calling the album a "betrayal". I don't take it that personally, but it was a pretty big disappointment. Still, even Hysteria was a betrayal/disappointment for some. Not for me, though I don't think Adrenalize was very good. I'm really glad they followed that up with Slang. Why do I like Euphoria despite that it possibly conformed to charts also? Well maybe I didn't dislike the charts so much in '98/'99. I think "It's Only Love" and "To Be Alive" still kinda rock, unlike many of the ballads on X. Well they both still sound a bit like the '80s, which I think was good for its "tough ballads".
