Bernard "Buddy" Rich (September 30, 1917 – April 2, 1987) was an American jazz drummer and bandleader. He is considered one of the most influential drummers of all time and was known for his virtuoso technique, power, and speed. He performed with Tommy Dorsey, Harry James and Count Basie, and led a big band. Rich was born in Sheepshead Bay, Brooklyn, New York, to Jewish-American parents Bess Skolnik and Robert Rich, both vaudevillians.

Buddy Rich was the first jazz drummer I saw perform live as a kid, and experiencing his intensity in a club at such a young age left a deep impression on me. It’s an understatement to say that he was one of a kind. His sound was always supportive, but it also cut through each section of his band like a razor blade. He used big drums-which had a major influence on his sound and projection. His setup included a 14 24 bass drum (with a moleskin patch and a wooden beater), a 9 13 rack tom, two 16 16 floor toms, and a 5 14 snare drum. His Avedis Zildjian cymbals, which included a 20″ ride, two 18″.

Buddy Rich, a hot-tempered musician who drummed his way through vaudeville shows and big bands, died yesterday at UCLA Medical Center in Los Angeles. Mr. Rich, who played with Artie Shaw and Tommy Dorsey before starting his own band 21 years ago, was hospitalized last month in New York after suffering a paralysis on his left side that physicians initially believed had been caused by a stroke. But above all, he was a drummer's drummer. Musicians marveled at the fact that he never practiced and that his hands were free of the calluses that afflict other drummers.
