The Proprium Mass (the part of the mass which is related to the liturgical year) is from the beautiful Gradulae Giunta (Venice, 1572), the Missa Ordinarium (the standard Mass which is always the same) is by Monteverdi, from his Selva Morale e Spirituale.

Claudio Monteverdi's Vespers have certainly stood the test of time. For music to survive four hundred years and to remain popular is not only quite remarkable but also testament to its innate quality. By 1610, Monteverdi was a married forty-something working very successfully at the court of Vincenzo I in Mantua. If that was the case, then it might have worked; he transferred to a prestigious new job at St Mark’s in Venice less than three years later. Recommended Recording. Michael Chance (alto); Mark Tucker (tenor); Nigel Robson (tenor); Bryn Terfel (baritone); Monteverdi Choir; London Oratory Junior Choir; English Baroque Soloists; His Majesty's Sagbutts and Cornetts; John Eliot Gardiner (conductor). Claudio Monteverdi (Cremona, May 15, 1567 – Venice, November 29, 1643) was an Italian composer, violinist and singer. His work marks the transition from Renaissance to Baroque music. During his long life he produced work that can be classified in both categories, and he was one of the most significant revolutionaries that brought about the change in style. Monteverdi wrote the earliest dramatically viable opera, Orfeo, and was fortunate enough to enjoy fame during his lifetime.

Vespro della Beata Vergine (Vespers for the Blessed Virgin), SV 206, is an extended musical composition by Claudio Monteverdi for soloists, choirs and orchestra for the evening service vespers on Marian feasts. In scale, Monteverdi's Vespers is the most ambitious work of religious music before Bach, with a duration of around 90 minutes.

Gardiner and his Monteverdi Choir adopt a decidedly "un-period" sound on this mid-'70s recording, with free vocal vibrato and a mix of modern and period instruments.
