The Late Great Townes Van Zandt is a 1972 studio album by Texas singer-songwriter Townes Van Zandt. It was the second album that he recorded in 1972, and a follow-up to High, Low and In Between. The album features two of his most covered songs, the Western outlaw ballad "Pancho and Lefty" and the gentle love song "If I Needed You"

John Townes Van Zandt (March 7, 1944 – January 1, 1997), better known as Townes Van Zandt, was an American singer-songwriter. He wrote numerous songs, such as "Pancho and Lefty", "For the Sake of the Song", "Tecumseh Valley", "Rex's Blues", and "To Live is to Fly", that are widely considered masterpieces of American folk music. His musical style has often been described as melancholy and features-rich, poetic lyrics

This is the second perfect album Van Zandt cut in 1972, a complement to High, Low and in Between. Together they contain the highest points of his brilliant but erratic career. The Late Great may be a bit stronger, with classics like "Pancho & Lefty," "No Lonesome Tune," and "If I Needed You," but there's not a weak track here. Van Zandt's voice is in top shape, the song selection is superb, and Jack Clement's understated production gives the tunes a timeless quality

If you love this album (which you should), and Townes Van Zandt in general, but comfort yourself by calling this Folk music because you hate Country music. Well, I've got some bad news for you sunshine. This is pure distilled Country music at its very best.

Townes Van Zandt perched on a chair in the little nightclub in Berlin and sang for an hour and a half. He was sober, which was a surprise; he was soulful and funny, which wasn’t. Given his bouts of deep depression and his adventures of manic frenzy, people took literally the title of his sixth album-The Late, Great Townes Van Zandt-though Eggers says it was a goof on the nonexistence of his career. Stories of his reckless ways were told and retold. One of the most notorious involved a drunken Steve Earle, an angry Townes, and a five-in-the-morning game of Russian roulette.
