Barney Rapp owned a supper club, The Sign of the Drum, and conducted Barney Rapp and his New Englanders. It was during this time that Les Brown heard her on radio and persuaded her in 1943 to return to his orchestra. This portion of The Definitive Doris Day Discography covers Miss Day’s initial radio recordings, and eventually leads to the final radio recordings appropriately incorporated on The Doris Day Show. Doris Day (born Doris Mary Kappelhoff; April 3, 1922 – May 13, 2019) was an American actress, singer, and animal welfare activist. She began her career as a big band singer in 1939, achieving commercial success in 1945 with two No. 1 recordings, "Sentimental Journey" and "My Dreams Are Getting Better All the Time" with Les Brown & His Band of Renown. During the war troops referred to her as "the American V-2" She left Brown to embark on a solo career and recorded more than 650 songs from 1947 to 1967.
Doris Day was a singer and actress most popular in the 1950s and early-1960s. She starred in a television sitcom called 'The Doris Day Show' from 1968-1973. Day's first singing performances were on local radio programs. She also sang with bandleader Barney Rapp and his group for a time. Rapp encouraged her to adopt a stage name, and she changed her last name to Day after the song "Day After Da. In 1940, Day landed a spot as a vocalist with the band led by Bob Crosby-brother of crooner Bing Crosby and a successful bandleader in his own right. But later that year, she teamed up with Les Brown and his group
Yet Sony Music's own releases devoted to Doris Day and Les Brown spread the music around to several different CDs, and suffered from sound that, today, seems substandard
Her glittering singing career included timeless classics like Whip Crack Away, Qué Será Será and Perhaps, Perhaps, Perhaps. On screen, the wholesome, girl-next-door never failed to find love. The pair had dreams of trying their luck in Hollywood but, the night before they were due to depart, Day's car was hit by a train. One of her legs was badly broken; her dancing career in ruins. It took months to recover. Kappelhoff was too long to display on the scrolling marquees outside concert venues. Her breakthrough came while she was working with the Les Brown Orchestra, with whom she had her first hit, Sentimental Journey, in 1945.
Local bandleader Barney Rapp hired the newcomer to replace his pregnant wife as his orchestra’s ‘girl singer. The latter was where Day got her big break: she fronted Brown’s orchestra on a 1945 rendition of Sentimental Journeyfor Columbia that became a huge seller. It wasn’t her only trip to the winner’s circle with Brown’s outfit-she also scored with My Dreams Are Getting Better All The Time(her second chart-topper),Till The End Of Time, and Aren’t You Glad You’re You?(several more hits with Brown transpired over the next couple of years). Day segued into movies despite having no acting experience. Her first role came in director Michael Curtiz’s 1948 musical ‘Romance on the High Seas.
When Barney Rapp, a popular Cincinnati band leader, heard her rendition of Day After Day, he hired the teenager to perform at his nightclub. For a decade, starting in 1948, Day had 30 top-20 singles, including Love Somebody and A Guy Is a Guy, which both claimed the No. 1 spot. She recorded almost 30 albums. I honestly believed every word of what I sang or spoke, and people respond to that.
