As the music world mourned the loss of one of its greatest innovators, another quietly slipped away. There were no centre-pages spreads, magazine pull-outs or sold out records, but contemporary music will never be quite the same again without the great French composer, conductor and pianist Pierre Boulez.

Pierre Louis Joseph Boulez CBE (French: ; 26 March 1925 – 5 January 2016) was a French composer, conductor, writer and creator of musical institutions. He was one of the dominant figures of the post-war classical music world. Born in Montbrison in the Loire department of France, the son of an engineer, Boulez studied at the Conservatoire de Paris with Olivier Messiaen, and privately with Andrée Vaurabourg and René Leibowitz
Music’s most famous opening is also one of its least predictable. The whole trajectory of Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony rides on its opening rest - a sharp intake of breath - and its first four notes. Questions receive early answers, setting expectations to be fulfilled over the next half-hour. What are a conductor’s philosophical and artistic commitments? What textures will be deployed? What risks will be taken, what rewards granted? Over the last 60 or so years, tastes have become faster, tougher, more astringent.
French composer and conductor (born 26 March 1925 in Montbrison, France - died 5 January 2016 in Baden-Baden, Germany). He studied with Messiaen at the Paris Conservatoire (1942-1945) and privately with Andrée Vaurabourg and René Leibowitz, inheriting Messiaen's concern with rhythm, non-developing forms and extra-European music along with the Schönberg tradition of Leibowitz. The clash of the two influences lies behind such intense, disruptive works as his first two piano sonatas (1946, 1948) and Livre pour quatuor for string quartet (1949).
Pierre Boulez was born on 26 March 1925, in Montbrison, a small town in the Loire district of east-central France, to Léon and Marcelle (née Calabre) Boulez. He was the third of four children: an older sister, Jeanne (. 922) and younger brother, Roger (. 936) were preceded by a first child, also called Pierre (. 920), who died. In 2014 Sony Classical issued Pierre Boulez-The Complete Columbia Album Collection on 67 CD. .Three major operatic projects from this period were picked up by other labels: the Bayreuth Ring was released on video and LP by Philips; the Bayreuth Parsifal and Paris Lulu were recorded for Deutsche Grammophon.
