She’s just a raconteur. EZRA KOENIG NOMINATES: "Besides Stankonia? How ’bout the Dirty Projectors album The Glad Fact. It came at this moment when people were really wondering where alt-rock was gonna head. Dave Longstreth had this uniqueness of voice-and I don’t just mean his singing voice, which is unique, but the perspective.
But let’s face it – those answers are so last century. Great sci-fi movies didn’t decide to party like it’s 1999 then call it a day; a host of thrilling, intelligent, offbeat, funny and frightening SF films have hit art houses and multiplexes since Y2K. In 2014, we concocted a list of the Best Sci-Fi Movies of the 21st Century - a quick and dirty survey of the best the genre has had to offer since the millennium’s beginning
Christopher Smith’s 14th-century period piece exudes an oppressive sense of physical, spiritual, and atmospheric weight, with grimy doom hanging in the air like the fog enshrouding its dense forests. His story concerns a gang of thugs, torturers, and killers led by Ulric (Sean Bean), a devout soldier commissioned by the church to visit the lone, remote town in the land not afflicted by a fatal pestilence, where it’s suspected a necromancer is raising the dead. The album, indeed, is all about thoughts, and the emotions behind them, more than it’s about tangible things; these songs float just outside of what we might easily summarize. And yet the feelings and impressions being described in the songs are quite real, and recognizable, becoming more poignant with each listen. It’s a quixotic and profound statement on the spatial and temporal dissonances that inform life in 21st-century China.
Since the 17th century, it's been the pursuit of love that has fascinated us, not what we do with it when we get it. All love stories end with a wedding, but where once we presumed the lovers faded away into a happy ever after, now they just fade away. Couples are uninteresting at best - if you're married, or as good as, don't expect to find yourself the subject of a snappy sitcom on Channel 4. Or they're malignant, 'smug marrieds', bourgeois, superior and sexless. A good relationship acts as a buffer against stress, depression and the general toughness and challenges of life,' says Mansfield. Couldn't we all, deep down, do with a buffer against the toughness of life? And, of course, we marry or we move in, more than anything else, for love. It's a deep human need to connect with another,' says Mansfield.
