Of all of organist Jimmy Smith's big-band albums recorded for Verve, this is one of the most imaginative ones. Oliver Nelson arranged a variety of themes from Prokofiev's Peter & the Wolf into a swinging suite featuring the great organist Jimmy Smith. Although there is no verbal narrative on this LP, Nelson's liner notes tell the story (which can actually be followed through the music) and Smith pays respect to the original melodies while making strong statements of his own. A classic of its kind.

The Incredible Jimmy Smith (subtitled Jimmy Smith at the Organ Vol. 3) is the third album by American jazz organist Jimmy Smith featuring performances recorded in 1956 and released on the Blue Note label.

Peter & The Wolf. Peter & The Wolf. Oliver Nelson's arrangement of Peter And The Wolf features all the deep flutes, driving bass, and orchestral punches that you would hear on action soundtracks of the era. Of course it also features the racedrive organ of the incredible Jimmy Smith. Smith is known for his laid back but agile, deep southern fried organ work on albums like Back at the Chicken Shack and Open House/Plain Talk. Don't be put off by the first few minutes on this album, which is a straight up orchestral interpretation of Peter and the Wolf. Then Jimmy Smith makes an unexpected entrance in the middle of side one and absolutely tears it up. He really kicks this thing in the teeth.
