Performers: Pekka Kuusisto (violin) Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra Leif Segerstam, conductor. These four discs collect Leif Segerstam's second cycle of the symphonies of Sibelius. First issued by Ondine in the early years of the 21st century as separate discs filled out with symphonic poems, the symphonies are here condensed into a cold, hard block of eternity. Segerstam's first Sibelius cycle for Chandos in the early Nineties aimed both barrels at eternity, but with the Danish Radio Symphony Orchestra's colorful and dedicated but sometimes too cheerful playing, he didn't.

Pekka Kuusisto; Leif Segerstam: Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra Sibelius: Violin Concerto In D Minor, Op. 47. (play). Sibelius(Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra. Leif Segerstam) Symphony No. 5 in E flat major, Op. 82: I. Tempo molto moderato. Einojuhani Rautavaara Symphony No. 7 "Angel of Light" (Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra, Leif Segerstam). The Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra was founded in 1882. It has grown from a band of 36 players to an orchestra of 102 regular members giving concerts attended by a total audience of a good 100,000 a year at the Helsinki Music Centre and abroad. Works by Sibelius and Rautavaara have featured on the highly-acclaimed discs made by the HPO. The disc of songs by Sibelius, featuring soprano Soile Isokoski and Leif Segerstam, was awarded the MIDEM Classical Award in Cannes in 2007, and Towards the Horizon, disc containing music by Einojuhani Rautavaara under the baton of John Storgårds, the Gramophone Award in 2012.
