Hot Shots II is the second studio album by Scottish musical group The Beta Band, released on 16 July 2001. The band co-produced the album with Colin Emmanuel aka C-Swing, and was a considered a departure from the dense experimentation of their previous efforts, instead favouring a more stripped-back style influenced by R&B, hip hop and electronica. Pitchfork placed Hot Shots II at number 118 on their list of top 200 albums of the 2000s
The album, Hot Shots II, appeared in mid-2001, and was warmly received by critics and fans. It sacrificed much of the first album's experimentation for more boiled-down pop structure and hooks. The band had originally intended to release "Squares" (b/w "Won"), which featured a sample from the Günter Kallmann Choir's 1970 version of Wallace Collection's "Daydream", as the lead single. The band began demo sessions for their third album in September 2002. They entered the studio with producer Tom Rothrock in 2003 and completed a number of tracks; however, neither the band nor the Regal executives were pleased with the results. Producer Nigel Godrich was called in to mix the album, which was finally completed in early 2004. Lead single, "Assessment", was released on 12 April 2004, followed by the album Heroes to Zeros on 26 April.
The Beta Band is the official studio debut album of The Beta Band, released in June 1999 by Regal Records. The album followed the critically acclaimed compilation of their first three EPs titled The Three . With high anticipation for The Beta Band, the band originally planned to record the album in four separate continents, but financial constraints slimmed the recording locations down; however, the album was still recorded in a variety of locations.

After a short hiatus the band gradually gravitated back into the studio and recruited noted UK producer Colin Emmanuel, aka C-Swing, to oversee the process of Hot Shots II which was released in mid 2001. Notoriously the band had intended to release Squares", which featured a sample from the Günter Kallmann Choir’s 1970 version of Wallace Collection’s Daydream", as the lead single. However after filming the music video and taking the single to radio it suddenly transpired that another single Daydream in Blue by I Monster featuring the sample from Günter Kallmann Choir recording.

After what the band perceived as an imperfect attempt at an album release, Scottish folktronic group The Beta Band decided to take a second stab at record-making. Amassing influences from the gamut of the musical spectrum, Hot Shots II succeeds in all the ways their self-titled release didn't. It builds upon the hippy-esque jam sessions found on their classic Three EPs and takes their unmistakable love of hip-hop and reggae for a combination unlike no other. Tracks such as "Al Sharp" and "Squares" stand out, most notably for their catchy hooks. Yet songs like "Eclipse" display a penchant for comedic philosophizing, proof the band still refuses to take itself completely seriously.
