Its music fuses Latin, ska, pop, soul, reggae and punk rock. The Beat, consisting of Dave Wakeling (vocals, guitar), Ranking Roger (vocals), Andy Cox (guitar), David Steele (bass), Everett Morton (drums), and Saxa .

For those who bought the English Beat's third album, 1982's Special Beat Service, on the strength of the mixture of giddy ska rhythms and pointedly political lyrics of their first two records, dropping the needle on the opening "I Confess" was a shock. What's with this Liberace-style piano intro? Why's it so mellow and mid-tempo, and why is there this vaguely Latin flavor to the rhythm section?
