The most famous tenor of his generation, he was renowned internationally for the great beauty of his voice and the soundness of his vocal technique. Music critics sometimes took him to task, however, for what was perceived to be the over-emotionalism of his interpretations. Historical Recordings 1927-1951 released: 1990. It was Beniamino Gigli singing 'Mi par d'udir ancora' from Bizet's opera, The Pearl Fishers. I heard it first on an autumn evening in 2001, when I played, more out of duty than anything else, a CD called Beniamino Gigli: Historical Recordings 1927-1951, a crackly, hissy collection from a bygone era. The disc had been thrust into my hand by a consoling friend with the words, 'Bollocks to all that adolescent rock'n'roll nonsense, you need to listen to some real music, some real emotion.
