Steven De Groote was born in Johannesburg, South Africa into a Belgian family in which, for three generations, almost every member had been a professional musician. His grandmother was a recipient of the Prix de Rome in Belgium, and his father the conductor of the Cape Town University Symphony. As a youngster, De Groote toured South Africa performing trios with his father on violin and brother on cello. The Fifth Cliburn Competition 1977. Alexander Toradze is universally recognized as a masterful virtuoso in the grand Romantic tradition. He appears with the leading orchestras of North America, and overseas performs with the BBC Philharmonic, Berlin Philharmonic, Israel Philharmonic, La Scala Philharmonic, London Symphony, Mariinsky Orchestra, and Orchestre National de France, among others. Festival engagements include BBC Proms, Hollywood Bowl, and White Nights in St. Petersburg
Steven De Groote, a South African pianist who won first prize at the 1977 Van Cliburn International Piano Competition, died Monday in Johannesburg. He was 36 years old. Mr. De Groote had been living in Fort Worth, the scene of his competition triumph and more recently his place of employment as artist in residence at Texas Christian University. He went to South Africa to visit his family this month, the university's press office said, and had been hospitalized at the Brenthurst Clinic in Johannesburg with pneumonia and influenza since arriving there
Steven De Groote, who won in 1977, died of complications from AIDS, which he contracted from a blood transfusion after serious plane crash. 1985 winner José Feghali shot himself in the head in 2014. Alexei Sultanov, who won at 19 in 1989 died at 35 from a number of strokes. After tragedy befell pianist Vadym Kholodenko, who found his two daughters dead in their beds last week, rumors of the 'Cliburn curse' resurfaced.
Training and early competitions. In 1976, De Groote took honours in the Leventritt Competition in New York City. In May 1977, he won the Young Concert Artists International Auditions in New York. In September of that year, he was awarded the Grand Prize at the Van Cliburn Competition in Fort Worth, Texas. In that same competition, he also took prizes for Best Performance of a Commissioned Work and Best Performance of Chamber Music, the only winner in the history of the competition to take all prizes.

On May 1,1916, Frederick Stock and the orchestra recorded the Wedding March from Felix Mendelssohns music to A Midsummer Nights Dream for what was known as the Columbia Graphophone Company.
The Van Cliburn Competition is held once every four years, in the year following the United States presidential elections. The winners and runners-up receive substantial cash prizes, plus concert tours at world-famous venues where they are able to perform pieces of their choice. Whilst Cliburn was alive, he did not serve as a judge in the competition, provide financial. support, or work in its operations Contestants draw lots for their performing place in the competition .
