Mike Oldfield & Sally Oldfield. Two Sides: The Very Best Of Mike Oldfield. 1974 E Album Set Deluxe.
In certain circles, this album seemed destined for greatness before it was even committed to wax and has more than fulfilled the promise of the Arkansas outfit's 2009 demo. Sorrow and Extinction is moving and graceful and devastating. But what separates Pallbearer from the million and a half other doom bands is soul. El-P's 2012 collaboration with Killer Mike, . Music, was the hard left hook to the jaw, but his solo record Cancer for Cure was the body blow- the one that rumbled your guts, left you sickened and confused. Solitude has always suited El-P, and on this record, he emerged from it with a record so dense and internal that it was impossible to discern the hum of the machines from the hum of his mind.
On their seventh album they complete an evolution from neo-bluegrass pickers to pure pop tune-crushers. Twenty-one-year-old Banks’ debut EP was 2012’s great appetite-whetter: a four-track-long amuse-bouche that left fans of the vaunted next-big-thing Harlem rapper panting for more. A full-length LP is due early next year.
This year 2012 will be remembered as one that was incredibly rich with quality metal albums, with some of extreme music's most consistent bands having issued near-perfect additions to their discographies this year, many of the albums listed here could have easily come in at No. 1 if released in past years. Albums from Between the Buried and Me, Converge, Pig Destroyer and Gojira made 2012 an incredibly competitive year, and certainly one of the best so far in the 21st century.
It’s among her finest work in a 35-year career, assured and at ease, and one of 2014’s first great albums. Following a solo detour in 2012 with techno side project Daphni, Dan Snaith returned to his main gig in 2014 with Caribou's first album since 2010's Swim. It's another winning combination of electronica and psychedelica, even if it doesn't break much new ground. This is rich, strange, endlessly fascinating music: a subtle, beautiful triumph.
