Perhaps one of the most revolutionary and influential people in the cannon of disco music, Cowley created his own brand of Hi-NRG dance music coined "The San Francisco Sound. Each double album also contains a 8x11 glossy promotional Muscle Up replica poster with original VHS artwork plus an essay from Maurice Tani. For Patrick's 65th birthday, Dark Entries and Honey Soundsystem Records present a glimpse into the futuristic world of a young genius.

San Francisco’s Patrick Cowley produced left-of-center disco classics for Sylvester and others and pioneered the uptempo disco variant hi-NRG. He also composed all-synth soundtracks for gay porn films, which are collected here. Even with their primitive, glitchy programming, these synth pieces are supremely sultry, reveling in freedoms long denied. Muscle Up is the second of two releases compiling this work, spanning time spent as a student at the City College of San Francisco to the period shortly before his death in 1982, when he scored his final smashes with Sylvester, Paul Parker, Loverde, and other Bay Area acts. As with 2013's School Daze, it takes its name from a real 1980 porn film, released by . s Fox Studio, that Cowley soundtracked.

Following Dark Entries' 2013 release School Daze, a collection of experimental recordings Patrick Cowley recorded between 1973 and 1981 that were used as soundtracks to gay pornographic films, the label released a second volume, Muscle Up, in 2015. As with the first collection, this one features extended ambient soundscapes (some of which run past the ten-minute mark) which bear little resemblance to the style of hi-NRG disco that Cowley helped pioneer.

Patrick Cowley - Muscle Up Many paths lead to Patrick Cowley. For those not present while the late San Francisco producer's Hi-NRG sound ruled underground gay dance floors in the late-'70s and early-'80s, his work can be discovered in bits and pieces. Some may have found the pioneering artist through commercially successful collaborations with Bay Area disco queen Sylvester-including hits like "You Make Me Feel (Mighty Real)" and "Dance Disco Heat"-or his fabled 18-minute remix of "I Feel Love. Around the 1981 release of his first album, Megatron Man, Cowley was hospitalized and diagnosed with a then-unnamed disease. A year later, he became an early victim of the AIDS epidemic that would go on to ravage gay communities, tragically ending what in a short time had become an influential career.

Can anybody tell me, is this the only way to get a non-vocal version of 'Somebody to love tonight' on vinyl ? I couldn't find it on any of the official releases..

the instrumental version is on a 12" as side b on ^ sylvester - I who have nothing on the uk pressing

There are a few UK/Euro 12" SINGLES released that have the original inst. mix.

Fantastic pressing throughout : very quiet and dynamic. A pure treat !

A really masterpiece of space electronic down kraut disco ... great remastered by George Horn ... an absolute must!

amazingly wonderfully space disco , get this now quick fast.

Wonderful album!

Release date is November 20th Not October 19th

Now that I know it, I can sleep more serenely.

Somebody to love tonight was a B-side of Sylvesters I who have nothing in 1979

That's a different track I think. The Sylvester is 'I need somebody..'.

Rolling Flipper
Yes, it's not just the instrumental of Sylvester's recording. Totally different recording.

Yes this version is previously unreleased. Sounds superb.

It will be interesting to hear Patrick's original instrumental version. Out 11/20/15
