Gotta pay the band' spoke to me--a bagpiper--and a man. 'Brother can you spare a dime'--finally sounded as though someone was hearing the lyrics. At the start they tried to make a sveltie out of her. Clinging gowns-etc--then she became herself. Stan Getz on sax is at the top of his form in what turned out to be his last recorded album. Hank Jones on piano adds a sense of romance and sometimes mystery with his frequent (wonderful) solos, and Charlie Haden on bass and Mark Johnson on drums provide the beat. On two songs, "Bird Alone" and "A Time for Love," Maxine Roach adds a haunting viola.

You Gotta Pay the Band. Stan Getz is featured on one of his final recordings on this excellent Abbey Lincoln CD; Getz's cool tenor fits in very well with Lincoln's voice, making one wish that they had met up previously. With pianist Hank Jones, bassist Charlie Haden, drummer Mark Johnson, and (on two songs) Maxine Roach's viola completing the group, it is not surprising that Lincoln sounds typically inspired. Actually, her version of "Brother, Can You Spare a Dime?" is a bit of a misfire with its dated lyrics (which should have been modified and altered to fit a female).

About This Album went to No. 1 on the jazz charts and remains Abbey Lincoln's definitive work. She's always been a great, idiosyncratic singer; this LP also shows what an original and personal songwriter she is. That said, the highlight just may be the Depression-era chestnut "Brother, Can You Spare a Dime?" Stan Getz solos throughout.

If Abbey Lincoln was overwhelmed by the responsibility of being proclaimed "the last of the jazz singers", she never let it show. The singer's occasional tendency to take herself and her message seriously, to the point of histrionics, lent unevenness to a succession of discs through that decade, but You Gotta Pay the Band (from 1991, with a waning but still poignant Stan Getz on saxophone) was superb material supported by a superb ensemble, and A Turtle's Dream (1994) much the same, with.
