British keyboardist Garry Hughes began creating electronic soundscapes in 1985 with his innovative debut, Sacred Cities. Ancient Evenings" is the mesmerizing title track from his 1988 ambient release of the same name. Hughes' unique sense of electronic texture has led to remixing work with various artists including Steve Reich, Robbie Robertson, and youth (producer of Crowded House, The Orb, and Killing Joke).

This CD has a significant mastering flaw: the polarity on one channel is inverted, so much of the sound is 180º out-of-phase. The corresponding LP and cassette releases of this album do not have this problem.

NB: the "hand-etched" matrix is not a typo. In over 20 years of collecting, I have never seen another disc like this one. I have no idea where it was manufactured, but it would appear that whatever pressing plant it came from was very short-lived. In addition to the polarity being inverted on one channel, the disc has another problem: it is so riddled with pinholes that it is unplayable/un-extractable in most machines. All this is rather unfortunate, as this is an excellent album.

I know Im reading your post 8 years later but you just peaked my interest in the quality of this cd I hope mine is playable if so I will be immediately ripping it onto my hard drive. A shame he has never re-released such a fantastic piece of electronica...
