Released June 16, 1972. The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars Tracklist. 1. Five Years Lyrics. The album features glam rock tracks Bowie writes alongside his Spiders From Mars guitarist Mick Ronson on tracks like Hang on to Yourself and Suffragette City with an irresistible blend of sexy, campy pop and blues power. The anthem Ziggy Stardust is one of Rock’s earliest and best power ballads. The upending of a traditional genre by reversing its premises is clearly a template for Bowie’s own scathing appraisal of rock’n’roll mythology. It also includes Alabama Song. A 1979 documentary film was also made of the same name.

Bowie admits a direct influence on the loose concept album was Vince Taylor, an English singer who took the ‘rock star’ persona to the extreme, calling himself Mateus and declaring himself the son of God. Bowie based the clothes, hair, and makeup of Ziggy Stardust on the Malcolm McDowell character in A Clockwork Orange, and on William Burroughs’ book Wild Boys. Ziggy is the definitive rock star: sexually promiscuous, wild in drug intake and with a message, ultimately, of peace and love; but he is destroyed by his own excesses. Other influences included the Legendary Stardust Cowboy and Kansai.
The Ziggy Stardust Tour was a concert tour by David Bowie in the United Kingdom, North America, and Japan in 1972–73, to promote the studio albums The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars and Aladdin Sane. Also, had RCA released the October 1, 1972 Boston Music Hall show - which was brilliant, despite Bowie having a cold that night - or this July 3, 1973 London Hammersmith Odeon program back in the day, it could have had an enormous effect on Bowie's career.
