Sheet Music and Tabs for Mel Tormé. Melvin Howard Tormé (1925–1999) was born to immigrant Russian Jewish parents whose name had been Torma. A child prodigy, he first sang professionally at 4 with the Coon-Sanders Orchestra, singing "You're Driving Me Crazy," at Chicago's Blackhawk restaurant. 1933-41, he acted in the network radio serials "The Romance of Helen Trent" and "Jack Armstrong, the All-American Bo. He wrote his first song at 13 and three years later, his first published song, "Lament to Love," became a hit recording for Harry James.
Mel Torme was so good in every professional way that many overlooked him, taking him for granted. His sketch arranging, his effective rehearsal methods, his intonation, his melismatic qualities(hah!) his delivery, all ths makes for masterly work. So many duds are now rich, from followings of the uncaring, unknowing, uneducated, undemanding, often because of some star-superstition. The 1st album of which I never heard until this release is quite perfect in song selection & performance quality. There are many lesser done gems like Early Autumn, Love Is Just Around The Corner, When The World Was Young, & Mountain Greenery. The last 3 are done by Mel on other concert albums. Mel Torme in his prime had probably the best set of vocal cords of any jazz singer around; and this album captures "The Velvet Fog" in his prime. Highly, highly recommended.
