Most of the rest are here, in perfect fidelity. If you were to judge this as a proper studio album, the notices wouldn't be too positive, due to the ragged and tentative performances. Judged as a loose, informal meeting of two giants, it's very pleasurable listening, though more for Cash's contributions than Dylan's. With full band backing (including Carl Perkins on electric guitar), the pair run through easygoing, rockabilly-tinged versions of Dylan songs, Cash songs, old Sun rockabilly chestnuts ("That's All Right Mama" and "Matchbox"), and a bit.

Dylan was at Columbia Studios in Nashville finishing the album that would become Nashville Skyline. Near the end, he was joined by Cash, whom he had first met at the 1964 Newport Folk Festival. The two were big fans of each other's work. I had a portable record player that I'd take along on the road," Cash wrote in Cash: The Autobiography. And I'd put on Freewheelin' backstage, then go out and do my show, then listen again as soon as I came off. After a while at that, I wrote Bob a letter telling him how much of a fan I was. He wrote back.

At that time, Nashville was perceived as being this conservative, Southern town that was not really following the trends of pop music - basically a backwater. As seen in the exhibition, Mr. McCoy’s 1970 datebook includes a session with Mr. Dylan scrawled in alongside work the same week with Charlie Louvin and Roy Clark.

During Bob Dylan's Nashville Skyline sessions country legend Johnny Cash stopped by to visit. A friend and label-mate of Dylan's as well as an early supporter of his music, Cash had been recording next door with his own band. The two wound up recording a series of duets, covering Dylan's "One Too Many Mornings" and "Don't Think Twice, It's All Right" as well as Cash's own "I Still Miss Someone.

Cash wrote the young Dylan a fan letter, and they began corresponding. When they met at the 1964 Newport Folk Festival, Cash gave Dylan his guitar as a gesture of respect and admiration. Five years later, when Dylan was in Nashville recording his ninth studio album, Cash was recording in the studio next door. He decided to drop in. On February 17 and 18, 1969, Cash and Dylan recorded more than a dozen duets. Only one of them, a version of Dylan's "Girl From the North Country," made it onto the album, Nashville Skyline
