His recording career began with cheap label Cinch in November 1913. He moved to Regal in early 1915. From October 1920 to November 1936 he was the vocalist with 31 dance bands on 27 labels. His long-standing involvement was with Columbia and its cheaper label Regal. He recorded solo under many names, and in duos like The Two Gilberts. He has the historical distinction of appearing in the first ever (low resolution, mechanical scanning) experimental television transmissions from the BBC's sub-basement dance-band studio BB in the then new Broadcasting House on 22 August 1932.
