The Life and Death of King John, a history play by William Shakespeare, dramatises the reign of John, King of England (ruled 1199–1216), son of Henry II of England and Eleanor of Aquitaine and father of Henry III of England. It is believed to have been written in the mid-1590s but was not published until it appeared in the First Folio in 1623.

The bastard king Close.

The Bastard is also the most complex character in the play. He cracks dirty jokes in front of his grandmother and is disrespectful to authority, but he also turns out to be the one character that is completely loyal to England. He criticizes dirty politicians who make decisions based on self-interest, but then he turns around and defends sleazy King John like he's the guy's personal PR rep. That's why famous literary critic Harold Bloom says that the Bastard is the first Shakespearean character who looks, acts, and thinks like a real person (source).
