The album includes the masterful Cattle And Cane, a taut, minimal, bittersweet reflection on McLennan’s Cairns childhood, written on Nick Cave’s guitar. A slightly reconfigured version of the song features on the fourth CD of rarities. On Spring Hill Fair, the Go-Betweens’ sound shuffles towards something lusher, more pop-savvy. For now, Volume One of G Stands For Go-Betweens is a giddy treat, marking the spot where the headlong rush of new beginnings meets the steadying hand of accomplishment. Graeme Thomson Q&A ROBERT FORSTER How hands-on were you on this project? It turned into my Lord Of The Rings!
Especially useful is the First Five Singles album, which shows that the band started off right away crafting super hooky and powerful songs. It may be the part of the set listeners will keep going back to over and over, especially when they need a quick blast of post-punk pop genius like "Lee Remick" or "Don't Let Him Come Back. Along with the music, the supplemental materials also make the set worth getting for the hardcore devoted, with Forster writing a typically trenchant essay and even some of McLennan's poems included.
I know that the t stands for trott, the c stands for canteer, and the g stands for gallop. The C stands for Cytosine and pairs with the G, Guanine.
G Stands For Go-Betweens (Vol. 1) documents the band’s origins in four LP, four CDs and an 112-page book, featuring photos and extensive liner notes. This volume documents them from 1978 to 1984 with vinyl re-pressings of their first three studio albums (Send Me A Lullaby, Before Hollywood & Spring Hill Fair). It also collects their early 7 output on a fourth LP entitled The First Five Singles. Additionally, the set comes with four CDs of rare and unreleased demos, radio sessions and a complete live concert radio broadcast from 1982. Vinyl (February 3, 2015)
