Oddments Inklings Omens Moments. Boston, Little Brown, 1959;London, Dent, 1961. Although Weathering, the 1978 collection of Alastair Reid's poems, includes a generous selection from his previous books, it also shifts the focus so that his distinctive contribution to literature becomes more evident. By contrast, in the earlier Oddments Inklings Omens Moments (1959) a playful interest in words themselves and in such subject matter as mirrors, magic, ghosts, cats, frogs, children, and games gives such immediate pleasure that his deeper, underlying human concerns might be overlooked. But the concern is present in the earlier poems.
Surreal poems by Stevie Smith and Alastair Reid sit effortlessly beside heartfelt tales of loss. A typically untypical range of poems, read by Kerry Elkins and John Mackay. Alastair Reid's work makes regular appearances on the programme but it's usually in the form of his translations of Pablo Neruda's work, so Roger takes the chance to introduce some of his own poetry; the beguiling 'What's What' and a simply beautiful one called 'Oddments, Inklings, Omens, Movements. Oddments, Inklings, Omens, Moments. Published by Canongate.

Alastair Reid was born in Galloway, Scotland on March 22, 1926. He was a poet, translator, and essayist. He wrote more than a 100 articles and poems for The New Yorker, beginning in 1943 and ending in 2004. He translated the works of Jorge Luis Borges and Pablo Neruda.
Alastair Reid, as well as being one of the great essayists of his day was also a translator and a writer of delightful nonsense for children, especially Ounce Dice Trice. His work Englishing Borges, Neruda, Pacheco and Mutis is every bit as important as the poems he excavated from himself. When Polygon published two wonderful volumes, Inside Out, and Outside In, equal measure was given to Reid’s significant translations. There is a section of juvenalia from the late 1940s.
