A Handful of Songs was recorded in 1963; a highly accomplished album arranged and conducted by Johnny Spence under the guidance of producer John Barry. It is typical of the high standards established by Barry during his tenure as 'associate producer and creative A&R man' at Ember, when the cost of his use of the best London studios and recording technicians was consistently justified by superior artistry, if not always sales. I prefer annie Ross is a jazz setting like her "Sings A Song With Mulligan" ot wirh L,H,&R on "The Hottest New Group In Jazz" or "Flying High With", or "Sing Ellington.

Annie Ross Sings a Song with Mulligan! is an album by vocalist Annie Ross with jazz saxophonist and bandleader Gerry Mulligan featuring performances recorded in 1957 and 1958 which were released on the World Pacific label. all the selections are quite rewarding and her interplay with baritonist Mulligan is consistently memorable".

Annie Ross possesses a uniquely idiosyncratic voice imbued with sardonic feistiness, and for that reason delivers clever lyrics with panache and swing in a manner unattainable by most singers. Listen to Ross's rendition of Christopher Logues's lyrics on the album Loguerhythms: Songs From The Establishment (with the Tony Kinsey Quintet), now thankfully in print once more (also on Él Records). The satirical words are delivered by Ross with such venomous charm that it is impossible for them not to make a lasting impression on the listener  . A Gasser!: Bill Perkins, Zoot Sims: tenor saxophone; Russ Freeman: piano; Billy Bean, Jim Hall: guitar; Monte Budwig: bass; Frank Capp, Mel Lewis: drums.

Sings a Handful of Songs. Sings a Handful of Songs. CD - DCC Jazz, DCC Compact Classics. By 1963, Annie Ross had permanently moved back to England and had started working more as an actress than as a singer. This interesting set (reissued by DCC as an audiophile CD) features Ross backed by an orchestra arranged and conducted by Johnnie Spence. The obvious high point is one of the darkest and scariest versions of "Love For Sale" ever recorded; Ross' desperate-sounding rendition is haunting. Otherwise, she performs a variety of standards in lightly swinging fashion, not scatting or using vocalese but instead working on interpreting the lyrics.
