The Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Herbert Von Karajan, and the Don Cossacks Choir recorded the piece in 1967 for Deutsche Grammophon. In 1971, CBS released a recording with the Philadelphia Orchestra conducted by Eugene Ormandy, also featuring the Mormon Tabernacle Choir, the Valley Forge Military Academy band and real artillery shots. British rock drummer Cozy Powell sampled the overture at the end of the track "Over The Top" in his eponymous 1979 studio album. Tchaikovsky: 1812, Marche slave. Tchaikovsky: Romeo and Juliet, Fantasy Overture by Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and Vladimir Ashkenazy. For Tchaikovsky lovers the Romeo and Juliet will completely satisfy. For those who enjoy the fireworks of the 1812 Overture (a piece that Tchaikovsky loathed and only wrote it as a commission for the Tsar) this performance is about as loud and raucous as they come.

1812 Overture, Op. 49 (feat. organist: Ian Tracey). 2. Romeo and Juliet: Fantasy Overture. 3. Marche Slave, Op. 31. 9'01. Francesca Da Rimini: Symphonic Fantasia After Dante, Op. 32. 23'12. Berliner Philharmoniker Don Kosaken Chor Serge Jaroff Herbert von Karajan. As a bonus track, we have his second rendition of Romeo and Juliet; this was later complemented, rather than replaced, by the digital recording (1982). This Eloquence disc remains an excellent opportunity for Karajan buffs to acquire his hard-to-find 1966 Romeo and Juliet and a fine introduction to Karajan’s way with Tchaikovsky’s shorter works for newcomers to his art. It shows the great Salzburger at both his best ( better than most) and his worst ( still better than many).
