From Quagmire's second album continues the attractive, unexpected twists and turns of the first, as the trio explores the combination of space and suddenly dramatic arrangements over seven tracks. The basic lineup and approach remains unchanged - Dorothy Geller handles all songwriting and guitars, James Wolf's sometimes shockingly abrupt violin shades every song, Vincent Van Go-Gogh plays "percussions" as well as handling the recording
The trio From Quagmire, classified as a "chamber" ensemble, play a kind of Appalachian Zen that sits in a void: the familiar sounds of the violin and nylon-stringed guitar are cast in an charged atmosphere, and they tolerate so much silence that each sound bears significance. It's not unlike last year's album by Nina Nastasia in its down-home-tinged creepiness, but Caught in Unknowing is more introspective, more improvisational, and even sparer; the cross between Geller's restrained playing and her bandmates' noisy wanderings makes this a fascinating listen.
