The songs on the debut EP from the viral rap and country star do not even come close to the pure magic of Old Town Road. Lil Nas X’s Old Town Road has burrowed itself into the consciousness of an entire nation, managing to stay at No. 1 on the Billboard charts for 11 weeks and elbowing out Elmo on the elementary-school popularity index. It’s part luck, part genius, part of the YeeHaw agenda, a song so unstoppable, it has actually shifted the status quo of country music and is currently one of the biggest singles-and memes-of all time

The former YouTube star’s debut album establishes a decent R&B mood but proceeds to wallow in thin, underdeveloped emotions. His debut EP, In Tongues, marks a natural progression into a more serious take on musicianship from a former internet comedian. His voice pulsates with soft and woozy vocal chops on top of minimal piano chords, like so many James Blake acolytes before him. And because Joji is a boy of the internet, it’s unsurprising that he seems to be most influenced by cloud-rap producers Shlohmo and Clams Casino-as evidenced by his emphasis on hazy atmosphere, organic samples, and lo-fi drums

Cheetah is an extended play by British electronic musician Richard D. James, released under the pseudonym Aphex Twin on 8 July 2016 on Warp. The name is a reference to Cheetah Marketing, a British manufacturer of microcomputer peripherals and electronic musical instruments in the 1980s (such as the MS800 namechecked in two of the EP's track titles).

A few lukewarm singles and a dropped prefix later, Mustard is back on the beat (hoe!) with his junior album Perfect Ten. The number 10 seems to be big with Mustard. He promised us 10 summers worth of hits back in 2014 and is now claiming that his 10-track album should win by flawless victory.

Happily, there are no such missteps here. Whether he steers as careful a path on the follow-up album that he has hinted will see daylight in 2019 is harder to sa. After the bombast of Nina Cried Power Hozier gets something approximating his funk on, with the smokey NFWMB featuring an ominous acoustic guitar and a multitracked falsetto (and mildly rude lyrics: the title is an acronym of Nobody f s with my baby). This is a vintage blues piece that aims high but features a rather generic vocal from Hozier. For the only time on the EP he could be one of any number of striving troubadours who’ve been advised by their managers to listen to Sticky Fingers. Still, there’s a winning finish as he takes it down many, many notches with the gorgeous Shrike, a tender slow burner worked around an intricate guitar melody. It’s soft-focused and not too fussed about causing a splash.

What Are EP Used For? EP or Extended Play of those years also played the role of small compilations of already released singles. Since the late 1960’s. Extended Play or mini-albums have become the exception in the discography of performers of popular music, rather than regular practice. The EP represents the middle ground between the long-playing LP and the single, which normally contained the intended trajectory for the individual release (side A) and another track that was typically a non-album cut (side B). Since LPs are made of vinyl, they are much more durable, and since they spin at a slower speed, they can have more music.
