Except for the Torelli and a sonata by Henry Purcell from 1694, all the music on this recording and most of the music on the other volumes of the set is by German-born composers. That might indicate that the trumpet was most highly admired as a solo instrument in Germany, but it might also reflect the historical fact that most of the best trumpeters, from the 15th to the 18th Centuries and even in the Italian city-states like Ferrara, were Germans. The composers on this CD include Purcell, Handel, L. Mozart, GP Telemann, JM Molter, and JF Fasch.

The baroque trumpet is a musical instrument in the brass family. Invented in the mid-20th century, it is based on the natural trumpet of the 16th to 18th centuries, but designed to allow modern performers to imitate the earlier instrument when playing music of that time. Often synonymous with 'natural trumpet', the term 'baroque trumpet' is often used to differentiate an instrument which has added vent holes and other modern compromises, from an original or replica natural trumpet which does not.

Trumpet Concerto No. 1 in D major, MWV4/12.
