Beyond the Gate is an album released by Moi dix Mois on March 1, 2006. The Other Side in Blood (SE)" – 1:00. Eternally Beyond" – 4:25. Deus Ex Machina" – 3:50. The Other Side of the Door" – 3:03. Eternally Beyond" (Instrumental). Deus Ex Machina" (Instrumental). Vain" (Instrumental).

Recorded by Michael Morley in 1993 as a duo with fellow guitarist/singer David Merritt, whose brother Sid adds piano and accordion on the final tracks, Lounge finds Gate in appropriately noise-laden territory. Then again, what else can one expect when the first song on the album is the 17-minute monster of a title track?

An incredibly noisey guitar duo record. You get the sense (as with most Dead C and Gate records) that the collection of tracks here are mere documents picked out from many recordings. You can hear this was recorded to tape (maybe cassette) as there are a lot of sound defects and speed blemishes. It's unclear whether it is just the two guitars or whether they're playing along to previous recording sessions as the sound is usually very full. The guitars are panned slightly away from one another so it easy to pick out each player and the interaction between the playing is mostly very good - mirroring each other at parts and resisting the urge at other points. I feel this is something Morley is particularly good at, he can be stubborn in his playing at times and doesn't always rise to the occasion so to speak but this just adds to the dynamic of the overall sound and usually gives it some tangible focus or forward direction (I'm assuming here that he is panned to the right).Overall an enjoyable record although quite an onslaught with little variety between tracks.Amazing cover too!

Highly underrated early period Gate prior to their Dew Line explosion the following year on Table of the Elements and the Dead C soon "signing" to Matador via Siltbreeze. No vocals or percussion here, but clearly this is a work of Michael Morley as this is more than just noise. Not as anti-social as Total from around the same time, there are "melodies" and Dead C-ish "ambient" moments mixed in. Great cover photo taken south of Christchurch in Rakaia, NZ, if I'm not mistaken. Cool titles and liner notes full of thank you's to the typical who's who of the world in noise.rock circa 1992.
