The album marked the pinnacle of Lightfoot's acoustic folk-country blend before he embarked on an increasing use of electronic instruments, although he did include some electric guitar, notably on the title track. As for singles, the title track reached on the pop and adult contemporary charts as well as on the country chart, while "Carefree Highway" reached on the pop chart, on the AC chart and on the country chart. Sit Down Young Stranger (1970). Summer Side of Life (1971).

Gordon Lightfoot chronology. Sunday Concert (1969). Singles from Sit Down Young Stranger. Me And Bobby McGee" Released: June 1970. Approaching Lavender" Released: 1970. Sit Down Young Stranger was Lightfoot's first recording for his new label, Reprise Records. He had left United Artists because he believed they did not adequately promote his albums. On this album, Lightfoot included more orchestration, which is particularly evident on "If You Could Read My Mind". It was also the first studio album to feature long-time Lightfoot bassist Rick Haynes. The orchestration on "Minstrel of the Dawn" and "Approaching Lavender" was arranged by Randy Newman

Sit Down Young Stranger. I'm standin' at the doorway. My head bowed in my hands. Not knowin' where to sit. Not knowin' where I stand. My father looms above me. For him there is no rest.

Album Sit Down Young Stranger (1970). Label Reprise Records. Gordon Lightfoot, Fred Foster, Kris Kristofferson. The room has all gone misty, My thoughts are all in spin Sit down young stranger And tell us where you been. Well I've been up to the mountain I've walked down by the sea I never questioned no one And no one questioned me My love was given freely And oftimes was returned I never came to borrow I only came to learn. Sometimes it did get lonely But it taught me how to cry And laughter came too easy For life to pass me by I never had a dollar That I didn't earn with pride Cause I had a million daydreams To keep me satisfied
