Muddy Water Live (At Mr. Kelly's) shows precisely how fortuitous Muddy Waters' history with Chess Records was. With the notable exception of Bo Diddley's Beach Party, the company tended to record its top artists in concert very late or, more often, not at all. Howlin' Wolf got one concert album so late in his career that he was merely a shadow of the legend he'd established for himself, and the label's resident blues harp virtuosi Little Walter and Sonny Boy Williamson II were never captured in concert.

Get it. Fantastic Muddy live recording, best I've heard. Pinetop kicks ass as usual and Paul Oscher on harmonica is better than Little Walter.

Muddy Waters had a great ear for talent and accordingly nearly always an excellent backing band. But the band accompanying him from 1974 to 1980 that you hear on the DVD was one of the very best: the pianist Pinetop Perkins, drummer Willie Big Eyes Smith, bass player Calvin Jones, the two guitarists Luther Guitar Jr. Johnson and Bob Margolin, and harmonica player Jerry Portnoy.

Mister Kelly’s was a nightclub on Rush Street in Chicago which existed from 1953 to 1975. From around 1956 until its demise, it was a springboard to fame for many entertainers, especially jazz singers and comedians. As reported in the Chicago Tribune, "It was a supernova in the local and national nightlife firmament.
