The Tornados enjoyed several chart hits in their own right, including the Number One hit "Telstar" (named after the satellite and composed by Meek) which was famously the first Number One hit by a British group in the . For a time, they were considered serious rivals to The Shadows. They were also one of the biggest influences on The Who, and also on the early Pink Floyd.

Robot" is nearly as pretty a tune as "Telstar" (it also charted in England at No. 17), and it sounds fresh, as something not nearly as widely heard for 36 years; "Life On Venus," the B-side, is a very close second, almost a "son of Telstar. Ice Cream Man" was another British chart single, and offers the spectacle of Meek and the Tornados applying a Bo Diddley beat to their trademark sound.

This album is nearly a reissue of their US debut Lp (LL 3279). It was January of 1963, and they had a new single "Globetrottin'" which was NOT on the original album, so London reshuffled the tracks, deleted "Jungle Fever" and added "Globetrottin' to the top of the second side. They also changed up the artwork on the front of the cover and changed out the band photo on the back. Otherwise, 'The Original Telstar' is practically the same as 'The Sounds of The Tornadoes" in America. Reply Notify me Helpful.

For many of those productions, Meek used an in-studio band called the Tornados. And in 1962, inspired by the launch of an AT&T communications satellite, Meek recorded the Tornados playing Telstar, an instrumental that he’d written, which topped charts on both sides of the Atlantic a full year before the Beatles would repeat the same feat. Telstar is an early example of pop-music sci-fi, and it’s the starry-eyed optimistic sci-fi of those early space-race years. It’s all whooshes and tinkles, everything in service of a tingly melody that somehow recalls both the Star Trek theme and the.
