The White Birch, 1994. The White Birch, 1994.

The White Birch, Codeine's last album, has remained a staple for winters ever since I first heard it. Lacking any sort of happiness, it kind of embodies the winter for me: plain, dull, and a black hole of emotion. Each time as I see my breath in the cold air, the songs pop into my head. It works as some kind of genetic disposition. Unlike a lot of slowcore, it tends to be a bit more experimental, mixing occasional blasts of anger and volume. These elements are used almost as punctuation throughout the album. Length-wise, it is a relatively short album, clocking in at about 43 minutes  . Angst abounds throughout the album. Somehow it avoids being whiny. Resigned would be a better term for it, the singer/speaker doesn't appear particularly distraught at the point.

Or consider a donation?

The final Codeine release, The White Birch, finds the band stretching out more beyond its usual style here and there, while still pretty much sounding like it always has. It's not quite a case of "heard one, heard them all," but at points, it's hard to see how they would have continued without completely repeating themselves. There is a slight change in the lineup, with Douglas Scharin replacing Chris Brokaw, at that time fully involved with Come, on drums, while David Grubbs once again guests, playing guitar on "Tom" and "Wird.

Just played my sealed copy. Record 1 is heavily warped. Skipping all over the place. Hard to enjoy when you don't know when the next skip is going to happen and have to get off your arse to shift it on. Really disappointed

poorly packaged reissue:- over-sized gatefold outer cover is to large for protective outer sleeves to fit it into- flimsy gatefold pinches booklet (a well written history lesson)/anything inside it- cd is "very hard" to remove without scratching (and you will if you can get it out) as it is stuck inside the non-ingenious "attached" cd slot in the gatefold.- booklet is nicely done. too bad it wasn't uniformily put together for the aesthetic appealwarped, noisy, flawed vinyl:- too much noise and popping - for my tastes/expectations - going on with these two records not to mention their flatlinessNumero Group seriously need to step up their vinyl production game if they are ever going to bait me again (I would need to confirm they've changed pressing plants (looking at you United Record Pressing) or implement a rigid QC standard. It's been six years since this item was released and Numero Group still produce low quality vinyl for jacked up prices
