Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750): St. Matthew Passion, BWV 244, Part One. 1N. Chorus: Kommt, ihr Töchter, helft mir klagen09:49. 2N. Evangelist, Jesus: Da Jesus diese Rede vollendet hatte01:03. Listening to the former in its re-released state is a revelation and it must surely glow as brightly as any great recording landmark of the 1950s. The 32-year-old Richter was at the height of his powers at this time. After founding the Munich Bach Choir in 1954, Karl Richter also established the Munich Bach Orchestra and soon formed it into a leading international ensemble.

The St Matthew Passion (German: Matthäus-Passion), BWV 244, is a Passion, a sacred oratorio written by Johann Sebastian Bach in 1727 for solo voices, double choir and double orchestra, with libretto by Picander. It sets chapters 26 and 27 of the Gospel of Matthew (in the Luther Bible) to music, with interspersed chorales and arias. It is widely regarded as one of the masterpieces of classical sacred music. The original Latin title Passio Domini nostri .

Bach: St. Matthew Passion.

4 Recitative: Am Abend da es kühle war (Part II, N. 4). Passions and Oratorios (BWV 244-249) by Johann Sebastian Bach. BWV 244 Matthäuspassion. BWV 244a Klagt, Kinder, klagt es aller Welt.

Matthäus-Passion, BWV 244. 3 CD.

Artist: Johann Sebastian Bach. Featuring artist: Clare Wilkinson, Octopus Chamber Choir, Le Concert d'Anvers, Bart van Reyn. Also performed by: Julia Hamari, Münchener Bach-Chor, Münchener Bach-Orchester, Karl Richter. Translations: Italian. A A. BWV 244 Matthäus Passion 30 Ach! nun ist mein Jesus hin! 30. AIR und chor. Ist es möglich, kann ich schauen? Ach! mein Lamm in Tigerklauen! Ach! wo ist mein Jesus hin?

In his day, Karl Richter was considered a Bach ‘specialist. There are few Bach performances on record as compelling as this. Among the vocal soloists, Haefliger is a rivetingly dramatic narrator and Herman Prey a warmly human (if occasionally stentorian) Christus. If Lear and Töpper are less than idiomatic Bach singers, they project the texts of their arias with passionate conviction, and that counts for more, in the end, than stylistic accuracy.
