Swaddling Songs is a music studio album recording by MELLOW CANDLE (Prog Folk/Progressive Rock) released in 1972 on cd, lp, vinyl and/or cassette. Too bad Mellow Candle weren’t able to make more of a go of things back then, but this album leaves an impressive and lasting legacy. Highly recommended to prog folk fans for sure.

Mellow Candle was an Irish progressive folk rock band of the 70s. Though sometimes compared to Renaissance, Pentangle, and Fairport Convention, Mellow Candle had a distinctive sound driven by the interweaving harmonies of singers Clodagh Simonds and Alison Williams, the melodic bass playing of Frank Boylan, and original songwriting.

Swaddling Songs is the only studio album released by Irish progressive folk band Mellow Candle. The album is noted for its multi layered vocal harmonies and complex arrangements. Over time, the album has been regarded a classic of the progressive folk scene. Heaven Heath" (Alison Williams) – 3:00. Sheep Season" (Clodagh Simonds, A. Williams, David Williams) – 5:01. Silversong" (Simonds) – 4:26. The Poet and the Witch" (Simonds) – 2:51. Messenger Birds" (A. Williams) – 3:38.

Album by Mellow Candle. The Poet and the Witch. Lonely Man. Boulders on my Grave. Clodagh Simonds: keyboards, lead vocals. Alison Williams: lead vocals. David Williams: electric and acoustic guitars, vocals. Frank Boylan: bass, vocals. William Murray: drums and percussion.

Not merely electric updates of lost traditional numbers, the album works because it establishes a voice and a sound that is truly compelling. The arrangements range from the zigzagging light progressive bent of the opener, "Heaven Heath," to the more storming tempo changes of "Dan the Wing. Strewn across the record is some truly remarkable guitar work, with the blanks filled in with lush violin and piano fills.

Mellow Candle were a progressive folk rock band. By 1972, the lineup had expanded to include Dave Williams on guitar, Frank Boylan on bass, and William Murray on drums. With this lineup in place, the band released their only album, Swaddling Songs (Deram Records), which was commercially unsuccessful at the time.
