BOOK OF SECRETS ('97) is a long ways from 1985's ELEMENTAL. Quickly, the visionary realms of Ms McKennitt took on more and more multi-instrumental layers until by her fourth album, THE VISIT ('91) she had perfected just how to build her ethereal works into heart-pounding sculptures of exotic art masterpieces and poems of rich beauty and deep structure. Loreena left the trail blazed by Clannad and their progeny Enya, fully paved and raced away from them at lightning speed. THE BOOK OF SECRETS is literally a journey, a travel through Loreena's literary and musical world as well as a personal documentation of her physical travels, and THE BOOK OF SECRETS is also her sojourn, her resting place after her travels.

The Book of Secrets, the follow-up to 1994's The Mask and Mirror - there was a Christmas EP, A Winter Garden, released in 1995) - finds Loreena McKennitt in the same musical vein, mixing Celtic, Spanish, Italian, and new age to create her own distinct sound. The only problem is that she did not seem to progress much during the time between releases. This is not necessarily a bad thing, since she still knows how to write incredible melodies and layer instruments to produce peaceful images.
