The Symphony No. 3, Op. 36, also known as the Symphony of Sorrowful Songs (Polish: Symfonia pieśni żałosnych), is a symphony in three movements composed by Henryk Górecki in Katowice, Poland, between October and December 1976. The work is indicative of the transition between Górecki's dissonant earlier manner and his more tonal later style and "represented a stylistic breakthrough: austerely plaintive, emotionally direct and steeped in medieval modes.

Included are excellent performances of "Epitafium" (Epitaph) for mixed choir and instrumental group (1958), "Zderzenia-Scontri" (Collisions) (1960), "Genesis II: Canti strumentali per 15 esecutori" (Genesis II: Instrumental songs for 15 performers) (1962), "Refren" (Refrain) (1965), and "Muzyka staropolska" (Old Polish Music) (1969).

Henryk Mikołaj Górecki (Polish: ; English pronunciation Go-RET-ski; December 6, 1933 – November 12, 2010) was a Polish composer of contemporary classical music. According to critic Alex Ross, no recent classical composer has had as much commercial success as Górecki. Górecki became a leading figure of the Polish avant-garde during the post-Stalin cultural thaw.

Professor Adrian Thomas. It is wonderful to see Barnard's Hall packed to overflowing on this wintry night for this very special event. The object of our attention, the Polish composer Henryk Górecki, celebrates his 75th birthday this year. The earliest of these works, Epitafium(1958), had been given its UK premiere during the London Sinfonietta's weekend in 1989, which is an indication of how much the West had to do to catch up on these early pieces. Górecki takes just the first two chords of the start of Chopin's A minor Mazurka o. 7 n. and rocks between them as in a lullaby.
