A Retrospective is a compilation album by rapper KRS-One. It features many songs that were originally released under the Boogie Down Productions title, and some songs released under the KRS-One title. It is composed of previously released material. The track "Essays on BDP-Ism" was the last track ever produced by Scott La Rock. No tracks are included from Sex and Violence, the final Boogie Down Productions studio album.

KRS-One ‎– A Retrospective. Label: Jive ‎– 01241-41718-1.

Throughout his heyday, KRS warned against emerging rappers going for the quick buck ("Love is Gonna Get'Cha") taught them to avoid trendy gimmicks ("I'm Still By the turn of the 1990s, however, rap had taken a turn that even "the teacher" couldn't predict. Violence and misogyny sold far more records than lectures about knowledge and vegetarianism. That being said, A Retrospective works best as a solid history lesson of raps first great transitional period, and most importantly, of the man who led it, proving it was possible to be intelligent,.

KRS-One is the most consistent rap artist (in terms of quality, not ideology) in the history of hip-hop-that's not debatable. What is debatable is why Jive Records would assemble a single-album retrospective for someone of this magnitude. A legendary rap career that spans over nine albums (to date) clearly deserves a box-set treatment. Sure, you do get a healthy sampling of his battle-rhyme headbangers from the beginning of rap's golden years in the late '80s ("South Bronx," "The Bridge Is Over," "I'm Still
