Anthology, also known as Anthology: The Best of The Supremes, first released in May 1974, is a series of same or similarly titled compilation albums by The Supremes. Motown released revised versions in 1986, 1995 and 2001. In its initial version, a 35-track triple record collection of hits and rare material, the album charted at on Billboard's "Black Albums" and on "Pop Albums".
This attractive box celebrates the 50th anniversary of the Supremes’ first single release, I Want a Guy b/w Never Again, in 1961 by bringing together all of the group’s singles between then and 1969 on three discs. The end result is an impressive legacy.
As with many Diana Ross & the Supremes releases, Mary Wilson and Cindy Birdsong did not sing on the record but rather Motown session singers The Andantes. The Composer" is one of only a few Supremes releases that was not performed on any television show. The song was rerecorded by Smokey Robinson & The Miracles for their 1969 album, Time Out for Smokey Robinson & The Miracles. The controversial Love Child scored the group another chart-topper, while a collaboration with labelmates the Temptations delivered a No 2 single and album; otherwise, Diana Ross & the Supremes struggled to scale the upper reaches of the top 30, a parlous state that can perhaps be explained by nd’s acrimonious exit from Motown in 1968. Gordy was already planning Ross’s move from the Supremes, and this 1969 single – along with a glitzy concert at Las Vegas’ New Frontier Hotel in January 1970, released as a plush boxed double-album – was her farewell to her bandmates.
