Violinist and composer Jenny Scheinman has done it again on Shalagaster, her sophomore effort for John Zorn's Tzadik label. With a quintet which includes pianist Myra Melford, drummer Kenny Wollesen, bassist Trevor Dunn, and trumpeter Ross Johnson, Scheinman wrote ten of the 11 tunes here, which range from klezmer-influenced classical music as it encounters jazz in the modern world - "Wiseacre" - to muted, loopy, tango bliss-outs ("Tango for Luna"), to the strange.

Jenny Scheinman: Shalagaster by AAJ Staff, published on February 16, 2004. Shalagaster draws its strength from the warm, melodic sound of Jenny Scheinman's violin, funneled into a series of relatively low-key original compositions. Varied international flavor comes through in the form of the undercurrents of "Tango For Luna," the kicking wedding dance of "Wiseacre," and the almost military "See Through

Jenny Scheinman: Shalagaster by Mark Corroto, published on February 3, 2004. Scheinman’s highly visible roles in bands led by Bill Frisell, Norah Jones, Vinicius Cantuaria, and Marc Ribot have gathered her much attention. This quintet with Melford, Trevor Dunn (bass), Kenny Wollesen (drums) and Russ Johnson (trumpet) is an extra large slice of Americana that would be very appropriate in Amsterdam’s Bimhaus

This is no small feat. Coast to coast, Sheinman has played with a who's-who of improvised music, from Scott Amendola and Carla Bozulich to Bill Frisell and Norah Jones. While there are no vocals on "12 Songs," that doesn't interfere with the tunes' natural ability to insinuate themselves into your subconscious. Ably abetted by a small group of her peers, Scheinman has written a subtle but compelling album.
