Donald Byrd (born Donaldson Toussaint L'Ouverture Byrd II) was one of the most consistent trumpeters to come out of the fertile Detroit jazz scene that emigrated to New York in the mid-'50s. Byrd possessed a beautiful, round, brassy tone often applied with intriguing ideas in intoxicating displays of exquisite jazz showmanship. Echoes proudly presents the entire WBCN-FM broadcast of Donald Byrd's appearance with The Blackbyrds at the Jazz Workshop in Boston on September 4th, 1973.

Classic Album Sundays and Jazz Café launch a new series of discussions and live performances exploring key records and their influence on contemporary music 'Kind Of New'. Our first guest was Yussef Kamaal and Daymé Arocena trumpet player Yelfris Valdés discussing and performing Donald Byrd’s 1973 Blue Note release, Black Byrd. A jazz funk classic, Black Byrd was Byrd’s first and arguably most lauded release on Blue Note with a poppy style that grew his fanbase exponentially across the globe.

With his growing interest in electronic music and gadgets, coupled with his love of Miles Davis' ground-breaking funk & rock informed BITCHES BREW, Herbie formed a sextet that would be able to explore the nether regions of jazz. Every once and a while an archival musical document will appear to blow your mind, for the fan of this Hancock era, LIVE AT BOSTON'S JAZZ WORKSHOP is pure manna. Grab it while it's still in print and reasonably priced. TRACKS: 1. Hornets 43:00 2. You'll Know When You Get There 20:11.

Donaldson Toussaint L'Ouverture Byrd II (December 9, 1932 – February 4, 2013) was an American jazz and rhythm & blues trumpeter and vocalist. A sideman for many other jazz musicians of his generation, Byrd was known as one of the rare bebop jazz musicians who successfully explored funk and soul while remaining a jazz artist. As a bandleader, Byrd was an influence on the early career of Herbie Hancock.
