Mark Henning's JUPITER JIVE does sound as if it was beamed from 'out there' somewhere, with its spare production and funky vibes. "BB Roger," for instance, has micro-bits of soul floating over the steady rhythm, while "Moody Bastard" sparkles with angular melodies and a start-stop aesthetic. I would almost characterize "Frau Daudle" as 'poppy,' but it has much more depth and verve than that; "Bobadob," on the other hand, has a stark beat and a few lower-range synth pads. "Run" carries in a similar, dark vein. "Stash" starts off club-ready but also gets sucks into the outer space vacuum -- meanwhile, "Fabrique Belgique" has a much fuller melody to accompany the rhythm. As a whole, the album has an almost Drexciya-like feel, but with a attitude all its own.
