Paul McCartney retreated from the spotlight of the Beatles by recording his first solo album at his home studio, performing nearly all of the instruments himself. Appropriately, McCartney has an endearingly ragged, homemade quality that makes even its filler - and there is quite a bit of filler - rather ingratiating. McCartney's trademark. The rest of the album is charmingly slight, especially if it is read as a way to bring Paul back to earth after the heights of the Beatles. At the time the throwaway nature of much of the material was a shock, but it has become charming in retrospect. Unfortunately, in retrospect it also appears as a harbinger of the nagging mediocrity that would plague McCartney's entire solo career.

Paul McCartney advanced notions first explored on 1994’s Strawberries Oceans Ships Forest and 1998’s Rushes, a pair of ambient/electronica instrumental collaborations with former Killing Joke bassist Martin Glover (aka Youth ), by going much deeper into the purity of first-take songcraft. The zenith came with Sing the Changes, a track that instantly became a setlist fixture. When the song comes to a momentary pause, it’s as if the dream-state reverie is complete. But a newly confident McCartney isn’t done. He may have called the album New, but here he’s thinking in the most thrilling of old ways.

In that respect, it makes some sense to reissue the two simultaneously, but their original contexts could hardly be more different. In 1970, when advance copies of McCartney were sent to journalists, they included a press sheet announcing Paul's departure from the Beatles, which had the further effect of breaking up the band.

Paul McCartney was equipped with the knowledge to turn his dream into a recorded song. Yesterday wasn’t completed when it came to McCartney. It took another year and a half for it to reach its completed form. Yesterday was an expression of what was going on in McCartney’s life, and elements from his past. Great art should be this way. McCartney was a prolific songwriter. He had many rolls of the dice toward creating a song that would last. The first reason doesn’t need much explanation. Paul McCartney was a musician. He had been playing music all of his life
