Essence The Lash Curler Mascara

I remember I was so excited when I saw that Essence cosmetics are available at Wilko since I read so many good reviews about them. I did not have a specific product in mind, I picked a bit of everything, from lipsticks to primers and this little mascara. From what I read, this was part of their new 2014 collection, so people expected some innovations. What draw me in was the design, it looked pretty young and funky and you all know I am a sucker for quirky packaging. Also, the idea behind it seems pretty amazing: apparently you can rotate the cap, so you get more volume. It did seem a bit SF, but I decided I want to try it.

When describing the product, Essence claims this:
" crazy curl! the lash curler is a new mascara innovation and has a manually rotating brush. unique on the market, the brush can be twisted manually as needed - sometimes more and sometimes less – while you apply your mascara to create extraordinary curl and volume. since the curl mascara is twisted by hand, it doesn’t require batteries. an absolute eye-catcher that’s fun, too! ophthalmologically tested."

Is it too good to be true? Let's see!

While I was a big fan of the design, when I opened it I was a bit disappointed. The brush is too small for me, I prefer bigger ones that actually add volume to your lashes. Anyway, I put that aside and applied a coat. Nothing. I applied another one and then I saw a bit of volume, but nothing spectacular. I mean, after 2 coats you should see something, maybe not the effects of false lashes, but still an improvement. But nothing, everything is mediocre about this mascara. It adds a bit of volume but that`s it, it does not hold a curl or lengthen my lashes. I understand this is a cheap product, but that`s not an excuse. When I buy 1 pound lipstick that are rivals to MAC, I expect a 3 pounds mascara to work. The only good thing I saw in this mascara is that it does not clump or flake, but that`s not enough. Oh, and that fancy mechanism they were talking about? It does not work, it actually makes things more complicated, because I find it harder to apply it.

Sadly, this mascara does not meet my requirements. I will probably use it when I go for a minimal makeup and want everything to look natural, but after I finish it I won`t repurchase it.

Have you tried any other mascara from Essence before? Are they better than this one?

  2. I tried this one out too and wasn't impressed with it at all. The twisting cap thing just seemed awkward! I think I binned it in the end.

    1. It`s a shame, I thought it would be a good one, because normally Essence have good products. I think I`ll throw it as well:(

  3. It sounds like a rubbish mascara, I was really hoping it was going to be good as well - I really dislike it when products have claims that they aren't even close to making!

    1. I know what you mean. I know they have to advertise their products and stretch the truth, but none of the claims were true. Really disappointing product!
